The sprocket is the driving force behind every excavator's movement. Mounted on the rear of the undercarriage and powered directly by the final drive motor, it engages the track chain link by link and propels the machine forward, backward, and through every turn. At Global Engineering, we supply excavator sprockets built from high-strength alloy steel, heat-treated for maximum tooth life, and dimensionally matched to OEM specifications, so your machine moves with full power, full control, and no unnecessary wear on the chain it drives.
The sprocket is also called the drive sprocket or drive tumbler. It is the toothed steel wheel at the rear of the excavator's undercarriage, mounted directly on the final drive hub. When the final drive motor turns, the sprocket turns with it — and its teeth grip the track chain link by link, pulling it through the continuous loop that moves the machine forward, backward, and through every turn.
It is the only powered component in the undercarriage. Every other part like the idler, track rollers, carrier rollers are simply responds to what the sprocket drives.
Most modern excavators use a segmented sprocket design, individual bolt-on tooth segments rather than a single solid wheel. When the teeth wear, only the segments are replaced, not the entire hub assembly. This keeps maintenance costs low and machine downtime short.
Because the sprocket is where engine torque enters the track system, its tooth geometry, steel grade, and surface hardness directly determine how efficiently the machine moves and how long the track chain lasts.
High-strength alloy steel teeth— Each tooth is forged or cast from high-grade alloy steel selected for hardness and toughness, capable of sustaining the high torque engagement loads of the final drive without cracking, chipping, or rapid surface wear
Induction-hardened tooth surfaces — The tooth faces and flanks are induction-hardened to a precisely controlled depth, giving the engagement surface resistance to abrasive wear while keeping the core material tough enough to absorb impact without fracturing
Precision tooth geometry — Tooth profile, pitch, and spacing are machined to match the OEM specification for each machine model, ensuring smooth, consistent link engagement that minimises shock loading on the chain pins and bushings with every tooth pass
Segmented or single-piece design available — Segmented sprockets allow individual worn tooth segments to be replaced on the final drive hub without pulling the drive, reducing maintenance time and labour cost significantly
OEM-matched bolt patterns and hub dimensions — Mounting bolt circle, hub bore, and tooth segment dimensions are cross-referenced against original equipment specifications, ensuring direct fitment on the final drive without modification
Heat-treated for extended tooth life — Full heat treatment cycle applied to each sprocket or segment before dispatch, verified to the hardness specification required for sustained operation in construction, quarrying, and mining environments
Corrosion-resistant surface finish — Protective treatment applied to exterior surfaces to prevent oxidation during storage and in wet operating environments including coastal sites, paddy fields, and monsoon-season construction
Wide machine compatibility — Available for mini excavators in the 1-tonne class through to large earthmovers exceeding 50 tonnes, covering all major brands and the most common model variants
Delivers full drive power to the track efficiently — Precisely machined tooth geometry ensures each track link engages cleanly and completely, transmitting maximum torque from the final drive to the chain without slip, judder, or energy lost to poor tooth contact
Extends track chain life significantly — A correctly profiled sprocket tooth engages the chain bushing smoothly without hammering or snatching. The primary cause of accelerated pin and bushing wear in worn sprocket systems
Reduces shock load on the final drive — Smooth, consistent tooth engagement reduces the torque spikes that occur when worn or mismatched sprocket teeth strike chain links irregularly, protecting the final drive motor and gearbox from stress-related damage
Segmented design cuts maintenance cost — Replacing individual tooth segments instead of the entire drive assembly saves substantially on both parts cost and downtime, particularly on machines where the final drive is difficult to access
Fits directly without modification — OEM-matched dimensions mean the sprocket or segment bolts straight onto the final drive hub with no machining, shimming, or rework required
Consistent performance in abrasive conditions — Induction-hardened tooth surfaces maintain their engagement geometry significantly longer in sandy, rocky, and abrasive environments compared to unhardened or surface-treated-only alternatives
Protects the full undercarriage investment — A worn sprocket accelerates wear on every track link it contacts; replacing it on time preserves the service life of the track chain, pins, and bushings the components that cost far more to replace
Single-source ordering with full undercarriage range — Order the sprocket alongside idlers, carrier rollers, track rollers, and track links from Global Engineering in one transaction, reducing procurement effort and freight cost
The sprocket touches every track link on every revolution. What happens at that tooth-to-bushing contact point determines how long your entire undercarriage lasts or not just the sprocket itself.
Soft teeth wear into a hook shape — Once hooked, the tooth hammers the chain bushing instead of rolling through it smoothly. This single change accelerates pin and bushing wear faster than any other variable in the undercarriage.
Wrong tooth pitch damages the chain from day one — If the tooth spacing doesn't match the chain link pitch exactly, every engagement is a mismatch. Thousands of impacts per hour compound into serious chain damage fast.
A cracked tooth under full torque is a safety risk — Brittle or under-alloyed steel fractures without warning, causing the chain to skip or de-track suddenly under load.
A worn sprocket destroys a new chain — Fitting a new track chain onto a worn sprocket is the most expensive mistake in undercarriage maintenance. The worn geometry starts damaging the new chain from the first hour.
Poor quality costs more in total — A sprocket that wears out in half the hours means two replacements, two installations, and two rounds of downtime, plus the chain damage accumulated in between.
