The track link and plate together forming the track chain assembly. It is the backbone of every excavator's undercarriage. It is the continuous loop of steel that carries the machine's full weight, transmits drive force from the sprocket to the ground, and provides the traction the machine needs to push, dig, and travel across every type of terrain. At Global Engineering, we supply track links and plates built from high-strength alloy steel, precision-manufactured to OEM specifications, and tested to perform reliably across construction sites, quarries, mining operations, and agricultural projects throughout India.
The track link is the steel chain that forms the inner loop of the excavator's track system. It consists of:
Left and right link pairs — Two steel links per pitch, shaped to provide the rail surface for the rollers and the mounting face for the track plate
Track pins — Hardened steel pins that connect adjacent link pairs and allow articulation as the chain bends around the sprocket, idler, and rollers
Track bushings — Hardened steel cylinders that sit around the pins and engage directly with the sprocket teeth; the primary wear interface between the sprocket and the chain
Master link — A removable link assembly that allows the chain to be opened for installation, removal, and length adjustment.
The pins and bushings are the heart of the track link's wear life. As the machine travels, the pin rotates inside the bushing at every articulation point around the sprocket, around the idler, and over each roller. This continuous relative motion wears the pin outer surface and the bushing inner bore, gradually increasing the effective pitch length of the chain a process called chain elongation.
The track plate is the steel ground-contact shoe bolted to each link pair. It is what the outside world sees when it looks at an excavator track, and it is what provides the traction and flotation that makes the machine effective on the ground it works on.
Track plates vary in:
Width — Wider plates provide more flotation on soft ground; narrower plates suit rocky or confined environmen
Grouser configuration — Single grouser (one central bar) for standard ground; triple grouser (three bars) for better grip and stability; flat shoe for swamp or paddy work; rubber pad for paved surfaces
Thickness — Determined by machine weight class and working load
Material — High-strength steel with hardened grouser surfaces for abrasion resistance
Plates are bolted to the track links with hardened bolts and nuts. As the grouser bars wear down through ground contact, the plate loses traction effectiveness and eventually needs replacement — either the plates alone, or the full chain assembly depending on the condition of the links, pins, and bushings.
High-strength alloy steel links — Forged from high-grade alloy steel heat-treated for hardness and toughness, providing the structural strength to carry the full machine weight across every terrain type without cracking, bending, or fatigue failure
Precision-hardened pins and bushings — Induction-hardened to controlled depth, giving the primary wear surfaces maximum resistance to the continuous rotational wear that occurs at every articulation point around the sprocket, idler, and rollers
Heavy-duty grouser plates — Track plates with hardened grouser bars that provide strong grip, resist abrasive wear from ground contact, and maintain traction performance across gravel, clay, rock, and compacted soil environments
OEM-matched pitch and dimensions — Link pitch, pin diameter, bushing outer diameter, plate bolt pattern, and plate width are all cross-referenced against original equipment specifications for each supported machine model
Sealed and lubricated pin-bushing interface — Available in sealed-and-lubricated (S&L) or greased configurations for extended pin and bushing life in abrasive and wet operating conditions
Multiple grouser configurations available — Single grouser, triple grouser, flat swamp shoe, and rubber pad options to match the specific working environment and ground conditions
Full assembly or individual components — Available as complete track chain assemblies, link assemblies without plates, individual plates, or pin and bushing sets for targeted component replacement
Wide machine compatibility — Available for mini excavators (1T class) through to large earthmovers (50T+), covering all major brands and model variants
Carries the full machine weight reliably — High-strength links and hardened pin-bushing assemblies distribute the machine's load evenly across the full track length, preventing stress cracks and premature link failure
Delivers traction on every terrain — Hardened grouser bars grip into ground surfaces effectively, giving the machine the push it needs on slopes, in loose soil, and across wet or uneven ground
Protects the sprocket, idler, and rollers — A chain running at correct pitch and tension keeps every surrounding undercarriage component within its design load and extending their service life alongside the chain's own
Reduces fuel consumption — A well-fitted chain at correct tension lets the final drive transmit power cleanly; an elongated or over-tight chain forces the motor to work harder for the same output
Multiple plate options reduce ground damage — Match the grouser type and plate width to your site and you reduce sinkage, avoid surface damage, and get better performance from the machine on that specific ground
Sealed chain option extends life by up to 50% — Sealed and lubricated (S&L) chains retain grease at the pin-bushing interface, dramatically slowing wear in abrasive conditions and lowering your cost per operating hour
Replace only what's worn — Plates, pins and bushings, or full link assemblies can be replaced independently, so you target the worn part, not the entire chain, and keep costs in check
Fits without modification — OEM-matched pitch and dimensions mean the chain installs directly on your sprocket and idler, with no rework or adjustment needed
The track chain is in contact with the ground, the sprocket, the idler, and every roller. All at the same time, across thousands of operating hours. What happens at that chain level ripples through everything else in the undercarriage.
Low-grade link steel cracks, it doesn't just wear — Fatigue cracks form at the pin holes under combined weight and drive loads. A fractured link means sudden track failure in the field, not a scheduled replacement, an emergency stoppage.
Soft pins and bushings elongate the chain fast — Under-hardened pins and bushings wear quickly, stretching the chain beyond its serviceable pitch sooner than planned. Once elongated, the chain hammers the sprocket teeth on every pass damaging both simultaneously.
Wrong pitch destroys the sprocket — A chain that doesn't match the sprocket tooth spacing creates impact loads instead of smooth rolling contact at every engagement. Thousands of impacts per hour turns a 5,000-hour sprocket into a 2,000-hour one.
Thin grouser plates lose traction fast — Plates that aren't made to correct thickness or not surface-hardened wear down quickly. As grouser height drops, the machine starts slipping on grades and in loose material hurting productivity before the plate has reached its intended life.
A cheap chain costs more in total — One that elongates in half the hours means two chain replacements, two installations, two rounds of downtime plus the sprocket and idler wear that accumulates during the degraded phase of the first chain's life.
Track Link:
Visible chain elongation — Measure the pitch across 10 links; if the total length exceeds the OEM elongation limit (typically 2–3% stretch), the chain is due for replacement
Cracked or fractured links — Any visible crack at pin holes or along the link body requires immediate replacement; a fractured link under load causes sudden track failure
Seized or tight joints — Links that do not articulate freely indicate seized pins or bushings; a stiff chain causes uneven sprocket engagement and increased drive stress
Leaking sealed joints — On S&L chains, oil weeping from the pin-bushing area means the seal has failed and the lubrication advantage is lost
Worn rail surfaces on the link — Deep grooving on the surfaces where rollers ride indicates the links are worn through and the rollers are beginning to contact the pin bosses
Track Plate:
Grouser bars worn below 50% original height — Traction is significantly reduced; the machine will slip on grades and in loose or wet material
Cracked or broken grouser bars — Impact damage from rock or concrete; a missing grouser section creates an uneven contact pattern that stresses adjacent plates and links
Bent or warped plates — Usually caused by operating on very hard, uneven surfaces; bent plates create uneven tension in the chain and cause the machine to vibrate during travel
Loose or missing plate bolts — Plate bolts work loose through vibration; if not retightened promptly, the plate shifts and can damage the link mounting faces
Plate thinning below safe section — When the plate body itself not just the grouser, has worn thin from ground abrasion on rocky sites, structural integrity is compromised
